Dahomey’s Spirits
History of Sodabi

The history of Sodabi, a West African alcoholic beverage, goes back several centuries. Its roots lie in the distillation of palm wine by the brothers Gbéhalaton and Bonou Kiti Sodabi in Benin. The drink has become emblematic in Benin and Togo, bearing the names of the brothers who created it.

Sodabi has spread to other West African countries under various names, but remains essentially distilled palm wine. It is an important part of the region's cultural and culinary heritage, and is also appreciated internationally, although it is important to remember that it should be consumed in moderation due to its health effects.
